A Short Message To Get You Excited For Sunday’s Worship Service.
Why Are You Sleeping?
By: Elijah Bell
Have you ever slept through your alarm on a day when it was very important for you to wake up? Maybe you promised a friend you’d drive them to the airport in the morning, but you fell back asleep. Maybe you had an important job interview, but pressed snooze instead. Or worse still, maybe you were a manager responsible for opening up the grocery store in the morning, and you stayed up so late the night before that you slept right through your alarm and the store had to open an hour late while angry and confused delivery drivers and customers banged on the door. Don’t ask me how I came up with that last example!
In moments like these, as we’re contemplating pushing snooze, we know what we NEED to do, but it’s often easier and more comfortable to just… keep sleeping.
In Luke 22:39-65, as Jesus is being betrayed and delivered over to crucifixion, we see every one of His followers denying Him, or “falling asleep.” First, we see some of the apostles literally fall asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane, followed by a string of other denials and betrayals. Each one of these is a way we still deny Jesus. Whether we are like Judas, who wanted to look like Jesus’ follower, while betraying Him with a kiss, or like Peter who misunderstood the coming of the Kingdom and used violence with the sword instead of submission. Or like Peter again, who followed at a distance, and warmed himself around the charcoal fire, not wanting to appear like one of Jesus’ followers.
We will look at these and several more from this passage this Sunday to learn the different ways that well-meaning people continue to “fall asleep” and deny Jesus, even today. We look forward to seeing you this upcoming Sunday, August 9th, at 10:00 AM for Bible class and 11:00 AM for worship as we allow Jesus to ask us the question “why are you sleeping?”
