A Short Message To Get You Excited For Sunday’s Worship Service.
Fields White For Harvest
Article By: Elijah Bell
Phones and screens have robbed many families of precious time that they will never get back. Imagine a parent sitting on the couch with their phone in hand, mindlessly scrolling social media, while their child nearby desperately tries to get their parent’s attention. This is a sad reality that we see in many households today, but it’s nothing new. The pleasures of self-gratification have often overshadowed the beautiful blessings right in front of us.
In John 4:31-38, Jesus had just finished His conversation with the woman at the well, and there is a beautiful opportunity (similar to the beautiful opportunity to spend quality time with your kids) to evangelize the entire town as they come out to Him by the well. Jesus is primed and zoned in, without a thought to fleshly gratification, while the apostles are concerned about food—Not spiritual food, but physical food. Jesus says in verse 34 “my food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.”
Jesus teaches us that true satisfaction in this life does not come from mindlessly scrolling, selfishly seeking pleasure, or being focused on the physical. In fact, he urgently reminds us that “the fields are white for harvest” (verse 35). The time is now. Before too long the opportunity to have those meaningful interactions with your kids as they are growing up will disappear. Similarly, the opportunities to be involved in Jesus’ Kingdom harvest will also disappear. Embrace what Jesus says in verse 36: “Even now he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.”
Jesus invites us to reap the fruit of eternal life NOW and to rejoice with Him when we stop allowing our fleshly focus to overshadow the spiritual need for Kingdom harvesters right in front of us, because the fields are white for harvest.
