A Houseful of Clocks

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

A Houseful of Clocks
Devotional by: Elijah Bell

When I walked into their house as a child, the sound of ticking was all I could hear. From every corner of every room of my grandparents’ house, clocks were ticking rhythmically. Carriage clocks, cuckoo clocks, mantle clocks, grandfather clocks, grandmother clocks, wall clocks, and every other kind of clock you can think of – each and every one was ticking away the seconds faithfully.

Every fifteen minutes, on the dot, I’d hear throughout the house a symphony of clocks, all chiming in: the quarter hour, half hour, quarter till, or the hour itself. It was an amazing sound to hear. Hearing that sound meant several things: it meant that all the clocks were wound tightly; it meant they were set correctly, down to the second; and it meant my grandfather had faithfully maintained all the clocks that day to keep them ticking away in unison.

The church is kind of like a houseful of clocks. We’re a bunch of unique timepieces, trying to tick and chime in unison. Some are wound and set correctly, while others are unwound or unset.

Many of us assemble without being wound up. We haven’t prayed and spent time with God that week or been encouraged by another faithful brother or sister. And so, we can’t chime out with the other clocks. We remain silent and dead: gears unmoved, hands at rest, and without a chime to be heard.

Some of us come to assembly wound up, but set incorrectly. We haven’t allowed Scripture to penetrate our hearts to tune us in line with God’s will. So, our gears are whirring, our hands are moving, but we’re not in sync with the true time and the other clocks.

What the church needs are faithful brothers and sisters like my grandfather – people who commit themselves to winding the clocks, helping their brothers and sisters have communion with God.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” — Hebrews 10:24-25

The church also needs people who can help set the clocks correctly: teachers and preachers, brothers and sisters, who speak the word of God to help align our lives with Him and His will so we can all chime in unison.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” — Colossians 3:16-17

Think of yourself and your own church family. Are we wound tightly? Are we set correctly? And if we need a tune-up, who will do it? If not you, then who? We should all strive for the church to be like my grandparents’ house: full of many diverse timepieces, but all hands moving in unison, all faces showing the truth of God’s Word, all chimes ringing out together for the glory of the One who created time itself.

Are you ready to unlock a richer understanding of the Bible? Join our new how to study your bible group designed especially for women! I will be teaching exegetical principles of Bible study that I learned while in school at Bear Valley Bible Institute. Then each class as a group we will study different passages using these principles to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word! Contact Katie Bell with any questions.

In this group we will learn:

    • Tools and principles for effective Bible study.

    • Confidence to study and understand on your own!

    • How to find the true context of the text.

    • Deeper friendships found with all of the ladies who attend.

    • Become Women Of The Word by being women who are IN the Word!

What to Bring to the Group: A journaling Bible that you don’t mind writing in or bringing post-it notes for placing inside your regular Bible. The text that we study each week will be provided on a printed paper, so don’t feel pressured to write in your own Bible until you are comfortable with it. Bible safe highlighters, pens, and colored pencils will be needed. Also bring a friend, this will be a easy starter class no matter what level of Bible study or knowledge that you have. I plan for this class to turn into one that we all can dive into the text together every week after everyone has learned the basic tools that we need for looking at the text.
