I Am Going Fishing

A Short Message To Get You Excited For Sunday’s Worship Service.

I Am Going Fishing

By: Elijah Bell

It’s a classic Hollywood trope: a “Gone Fishing” sign hanging on a door, letting you know that whomever you were trying to reach has totally checked out. They are unavailable and unreachable. Many people love fishing for this very reason; it’s a quiet, relaxing getaway when things get crazy and you want to disappear from the radar for a while.

This is the apostle Peter in John 21:1-14. After the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, things were not going his way. He had planned to take up a sword to fight for Jesus, expecting His worldwide Kingdom to conquer and for Him and His apostles to rule together. When that didn’t happen in the way Peter was expecting, he wasn’t sure what to do with himself. Even though he had seen Jesus personally two times since He rose from the dead, he goes back to what he knew before Jesus: fishing (John 21:3). He had hung up the metaphorical “gone fishing” sign. He had checked out. But Peter quickly realized that going back to the old ways was not going to be very productive. He caught nothing all night (John 21:3). It wasn’t until they saw Jesus on the shore and obeyed His voice to “cast the net on the right side of the boat” that they caught a huge amount of fish (John 21:6).

How many of us do what Peter did when things aren’t happening the way we hoped? We check out, and go fishing for the wrong things. We go back to the world, back to what we knew before encountering Jesus. We will find that we catch nothing as well. But when we allow Jesus to guide us, we’ll make a great catch!

Please join us this Sunday at 10:00 AM for Bible class and 11:00 AM for worship service when we look at John 21:1-14 and examine what happens when we say “I am going fishing.” We hope to see you there!

  • Announcement Regarding The Selection of Elders

Holly Hill Church of Christ is preparing to begin the process of selecting elders to serve and provide spiritual leadership for our congregation. Over the past several months, from July through early October, Robert Roach and Elijah Bell have led a Sunday morning Bible class examining the scriptural qualifications and responsibilities of elders. We sincerely appreciate their dedication to helping our congregation better understand this important biblical responsibility.

As we move forward, we encourage every member of the congregation to approach this process with prayer, thoughtful consideration, and a commitment to seeking God's guidance. The following timeline outlines the steps that will be taken in the selection of elders.

    Elder Selection Timeline

    Oct 11 - Dec 31 | Prayer & Discussion

During this period, the Evangelistic Committee and the congregation are encouraged to continue praying for wisdom and guidance. Members should engage in thoughtful discussions with one another and with potential candidates regarding the responsibilities and qualifications of serving as an elder.

    Jan 1 - Jan 24 | Submission of Names

Members of the congregation may submit the names of individuals they believe meet the scriptural qualifications for eldership to the Evangelistic Committee for consideration.

    Jan 25 - Feb 6 | Candidate Review

The Evangelistic Committee will prayerfully review and evaluate the individuals whose names have been submitted. Any committee member who chooses to pursue candidacy as an elder will recuse himself from the evaluation and selection process.

    Feb 7 - Feb 28 | Presentation of Candidates

A representative of the Evangelistic Committee will publicly announce the names of the candidates over a three-week period. Biographical information and photographs of each candidate will also be displayed in the church foyer.

During this time, any member who has a scriptural concern regarding a candidate is encouraged to bring that concern directly to a member of the Evangelistic Committee. The committee will carefully and appropriately address all concerns presented.

    Mar 7 | Congregational Vote

All baptized individuals who are part of the Holly Hill Church of Christ congregation will have the opportunity to vote in person, indicating a "yes" or "no" for each candidate.

Those unable to attend may designate any member of Holly Hill Church of Christ to cast a proxy vote on their behalf.

To be approved, a candidate must receive at least 80% affirmative votes from the baptized individuals participating in the vote, whether in person or by proxy.

Mar 14 | Installation of Elders

Candidates receiving the required 80% approval will be installed as elders, provided the congregation has approved at least three candidates.

Special Provision Regarding the Number of Elders

It is the congregation's intention to establish an eldership consisting of at least three qualified men.

If no more than two candidates are presented for consideration, or if only two candidates receive the required approval following the congregational vote, the installation process will be postponed.

In this situation, the congregation will wait at least six months, continuing in prayer, biblical education, and thoughtful consideration before undertaking an abbreviated selection process with the goal of establishing an eldership of at least three qualified men.

A Call to Prayer & Unity

The selection of elders is a significant milestone in the spiritual life and future of Holly Hill Church of Christ. We ask every member to remain actively engaged throughout this process, prayerfully considering the men who may be called to shepherd, guide, and serve this congregation.

May we approach each step with humility, unity, mutual respect, and a sincere desire to follow God's Word. Our prayer is that, through this process, the Lord will bless Holly Hill with faithful, spiritually mature leaders who will lovingly shepherd His people and help strengthen the congregation for generations to come.

We encourage everyone to keep this important process, the potential candidates, the Evangelistic Committee, and the entire Holly Hill family in your prayers.
