The Greatest Artist

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

Mini Devotional

A mini message to take with you this week to help you in your devotion to God.

The Greatest Artist
Devotional by: Elijah Bell

When I was young I didn’t appreciate good art. I thought it was silly that old people loved collecting and fawning over these boring paintings of landscapes, barns, or people just sitting there! Why would anyone value that? But as I have grown older, I have learned to appreciate the beauty and creativity that goes into a good piece or art.

Human creativity is borne out of our natural desire to be like our Creator. God Himself is the original and greatest Artist. He was the first to create anything (Genesis 1:1). We humans, because we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27), have an innate desire to create, and even to appreciate the creations of other humans.

When I look at a piece of art, I like to learn something about the artist. I like to get the piece under good lighting, I like to examine it closely and see the artist’s style and vision in the details. The fine brush strokes, the contrasts of light and shadow, the composition, and use of colors to convey meaning. I like to be able to study the signature to learn who may have created the piece. If the signature is obscured or difficult to make out, I  might need to infer things about the artist from the work’s style, apparent age, subject matter, etc.

Come to think about it, our universe, and God’s Word are very much works of art to be studied in order to learn something about the Artist. We need to look at the world and His Word under good lighting, i.e., we must examine everything within the understanding that Jesus Christ is Lord. We should also back up and get an overarching view to understand the composition of God’s vision and plan. We also need to get up close and examine the details to see His care in the smallest of brush strokes. And we need to especially look for His signature so we truly know the Artist!

“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” — Romans 1:20

The universe is God’s canvas. Let’s not let a day go by without noticing God’s signature everywhere, and learn to appreciate His work! Let’s all get to know the original and greatest Artist!
